Rockets fired after Gaza clashesThe fighting broke out on Tuesday evening as Israeli tanks and a bulldozer moved 250m into the central part of the coastal enclave, backed by military aircraft, says the BBC's Aleem Maqbool in Ramallah. Israel said Tuesday's raid was not a violation of the ceasefire, but rather a legitimate step to remove an immediate threat. news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/7709603.stm Posted on 30 Dec 2008 by goldsmith

Haredim Begin Confronting Pedophilia
Thu. Oct 02, 2008 http://www.forward.com/articles/14314/ After years in which the issue of pedophilia has been quietly dealt with among ultra-Orthodox Jews, a number of leaders in the community are speaking out publicly on the topic, spurring anger and debate over this sensitive issue. Sexual abuse of children has periodically arisen in the
ultra-Orthodox community through high-profile cases like that of Yehuda
Kolko and Avrohom Mondrowitz, a teacher and a youth counselor,
respectively, who were accused of abusing their students. Leaders in
the community told the Forward that they generally treated those cases
as isolated incidents. But both the Kolko and Mondrowitz cases have
bubbled back up, and in the past few months a number of community
leaders have forcefully taken the issue to a new plane. continues... Posted on 01 Nov 2008 by goldsmith
Radical Israeli settlers break
Radical Israeli settlers break a taboo: violence against Jews
Or, bringing it into the modern age, as Sternhell put it, "We do not want another Yitzhak Rabin," referring to the 1995 assassination of the prime minister. On Sept. 25, the Hebrew University professor, Holocaust survivor, Israel Prize winner and outspoken peace activist was the target of a pipe bomb attack suspected to have been carried out by right-wing Jewish extremists. "Our society has a problem and we must confront it," Sternhell said. Posted on 18 Oct 2008 by goldsmith

Arrrests in Baltimore anti-Semitic graffiti
Published: 10/10/2008 Three Jews have been arrested in connection with anti-Semitic graffiti in Baltimore. Two adults and one juvenile — all reportedly Jews — were charged Tuesday with misdemeanors for destruction of property and damage to a religious entity, according to the Baltimore Jewish Times. They allegedly defaced signs at Baltimore Hebrew Congregation and Beth Tfiloh Synagogue advertising the Baltimore Associated’s fall campaign. The signs were found Sunday morning with spray-painted inverted swastika symbols and the phrases “Nazis” and “WK.” JTA, The Global News Service of the jewish people. http://www.jta.org/cgi-bin/iowa/news/article/20081010daysawe.htmlPosted on 18 Oct 2008 by goldsmith
